| SATURDAY 26 APRIL 2008 - WORCESTER WANDERERS SECONDS 12 - 42 HEREFORD THIRDS | |||||||||||||||

After losing to Wanderers 2nds in
January, Hereford's young third fifteen replied with a ruthless
display of rugby. The game was fairly even with one try a piece after
twenty minutes. Then Simon Sabel scored a brilliant individual try
ducking under two tacklers and darting for the posts for five points.
Unable to convert, the thirds powered on with Alex Kelso bagging his
second try. After half time Hereford were relentless with their
attacking style and their quick and skilful backline made the most of
quick ball provided by the forwards. Richard Rees bagged himself a try
after a neat passing movement with Lougman and Kelso. Chris Hill also
got on the score sheet for the first time this season. After a neat
offload from Rees, Hill ran down the wing, sidestepped two defenders
and scored under the posts. Unable to convert Hereford were awarded
with a penalty which Loughman converted after Wanderers persistent
offences at the breakdown. With Jim Kenyon bagging a try and Kelso
scoring another for a hat trick, Hereford thirds gained another two
points in there final league game of the season leaving them in third
place missing out on promotion by six points. Providing the same
commitment and enthusiasm is shown next season the thirds should have

With the sun shining the third team
proved themselves again with another comfortable league win away at
Woodrush. From the kick off Hereford's second row totally missed the first catch of the game. Woodrush pressed forward with some pick and drives from the base of the ruck and, thanks to some infringements from Hereford, Woodrush were awarded with a penalty which they missed. Thankfully Hereford's halfbacks were on hand to bail the third team out with some solid clearance kicks from Tom Donativo. Unfortunately the line out was not working as well as it should have but after some clean ball was won by Alex Hill, the ball was spun out to Alex Kelso who smashed his way through the Woodrush defence only for the ref to blow his whistle for not releasing. With Woodrush gaining some turnover ball they were able to kick deep. Fortunately speedy full back Matt Hallett was once again on hand to recover the ball and beat up to five defenders several times during this game earning him man of the match. After sustained pressure from Hereford's lock forward Lagi Buadromo took the ball into contact laying the ball back for Hereford's scrumhalf to spin out to Donativo who popped to Kelso who powered over for the first score which was converted by Donativo. The next try was a result of Matt Hallett receiving the ball deep and side-stepping his way through the Woodrush defence. Hallett then passed to Buadromo who charged for the line only to be tackled five metres short. Thankfully due to a superb offload in the tackle Donativo was able to catch and score under the posts.During the next half with the wind behind them Hereford wasted opportunity's to score, but after a strong attack by the forwards, Alex Hill went over for another five points. Loose head prop Fin was unable to convert. After sixty minutes Hereford brought on there replacement lock Tony Davies who played well in the tight areas of play. With Hereford scoring again through James Watters and Woodrush replying with one converted score the final score was..........Hereford 3rd XV 22, Woodrush 2nd XV 7 |

The Third team enjoyed a comfortable
league win in the merit league division two. Unfortunately after some great turnovers in the scrums, captain and hooker Richard Sparey had to go off after injuring his shoulder. Blindside flanker Adam Lydock moved to hooker while Lagi Buadromo moved back to blindside flanker from number eight, Alex Kelso came off the bench at number eight. After a slow start, Hereford's flyhalf Tom Donativo put a kick deep in to Stourport's twenty-two. The follow up kick from Hereford's scrumhalf was then picked up and he went over for Hereford's first score. Donativo was unable convert. Hereford kept up the pressure with powerful attacking runs from lock forward Caleb Haines and no.8 Alex Kelso but after a deep kick from Donativo, the Stourport blindside flanker attempted to run the ball from his own ten metre line only to be met by both Hereford's centres Sam Louis and Dan Jenkins and also the blindside flanker Lagi Buadromo. The resulting collision knocked the ball out of the Stourport player's hands resulting in a Hereford attack being held up five metres short. Donativo spun the ball out to loose head prop Fin who dummy passed and went over for five points. With Hereford refusing to let up, wingers James Watters and Chris Hill pressed forward with some great follow ups from kicks. A minor piece of indiscipline resulted in Watters being sin-binned in the second half. Hereford's full back showed great potential receiving opposing kicks and then running and side stepping his way past defenders to take his team out of trouble. The next try was a result of more sustained pressure from the Hereford pack. Once again the halfbacks, making good use of quick ball, let the Hereford back line loose in Stourport's half. Once again a ruck was formed five metres out resulting in Hereford's scrumhalf spinning the ball out to the fly half who used a neat switch move to Adam Lydock who scored under the posts. Donativo converted to make it seventeen-nil. With subs Chris Williams and Fonz used in the first and second half, the Hereford back line enjoyed running the ball and missed a few more opportunity's to add more tries. Eventually, after more persistence, Kelso powered forward, being held up five metres out. The ball was spun out to Alex Hill who went over for five points. With Donativo unable to convert the final score was Hereford 3rd XV 22 Stourport 2nd XV 0. | SATURDAY 23 FEBRUARY 2008 - PERSHORE THIRDS 5 - 24 HEREFORD THIRDS | |||||||||||||||

Hereford thirds gained an away win at
Pershore with a confident display of forward dominated rugby. Alex Kelso opened the scoring with a powerful 30 metre run in after Matt Milsom and Alex Hill confidently ran back a loose Pershore kick. Tom Donativo added the extras. Kelso again got on the score sheet with a trademark run and Bruce Clifford, making a welcome return to the club, converted the difficult goal. 14-0 at half time. In the second half with numerous changes the Hereford pack continued to dominate at scrum time but a few chances were squandered until the impressively strong James Watters kicked through a loose Pershore pass on his own 22m line, picked up and destroyed the home defence with a devastating 40 metre run. In a final coup de grace, Dan Jenkins, the replacement prop, executed a near carbon copy of Watters' earlier attempt with a 30 metre run in down the line, fending off many Pershore defenders. The team now look forward to entertaining Malvern 3rds in the league next week. |

| SATURDAY 16 FEBRUARY 2008 - HEREFORD THIRDS 5 - 5 LUCTONIANS THIRDS | |||||||||||||||

With the Third team's league opponents
unable to produce a side, the Thirds took the two points and enjoyed a
friendly against Luctonians Thirds. For the first thirty minutes both sides enjoyed periods of open play with the Hereford's backline producing some excellent counter attacks from opposing kicks. The deadlock was finally broken with a well worked try from Charlie Loughton after sustained pressure from the young dynamic pack. Loughton was unable to convert sending the home side five nil up at half time. Lucs battled hard during the second half and were rewarded with an unconverted try from scrumhalf David Higgs. Hereford maintained an aggressive and inventive game deciding to run the ball in the last five minutes. Alex Kelso smashed his way through the Lucs' defence, falling just short of the half way line, Hereford's no. 8 picked up from the ruck and ran to the Lucs twenty two. Lucs cleared the ball with the ref blowing the whistle for full time, the final score being Hereford Thirds 5 Luctonians Thirds 5. |

| SATURDAY 2 FEBRUARY 2008 - WORCESTER WANDERERS SECONDS 15 - 7 HEREFORD THIRDS | |||||||||||||||

In their return to league rugby after a
two month break, Hereford's Third XV made a determined effort to
overturn Merit Table Division Two second place team, Worcester
Wanderers Seconds, at a wind swept Sixways. Despite fielding a very young team the Thirds battled extremely hard against a very experienced Worcester team. Playing into the wind they turned round at half time only 10-7 down after Alex Kelso picked up from a scrum on the Worcester 22m line and burst through some strong defence to touch down under the posts. Charlie Loughton added the extra two to take the lead after Wanderers had taken an early lead with a penalty. After a succession of penalties Worcester then regained the lead just before the break. Playing with the advantage of the wind Hereford did not make the most of several try scoring opportunities and were forced to defend valiantly for long periods of the second half with the Worcester finally breaking through to make the score 15-7. All the Hereford players performed to an excellent level considering their relative youth and they can approach the forthcoming league fixtures with relish. |
