| SATURDAY 3 MAY 2008 - HEREFORD 33 - 27 ABERGAVENNY | |||||||||||||||
|
With Hereford fielding a team from all
their senior sides they entertained Abergavenny at Wyeside and
although they had a strong lead at half time they underestimated the
opposition's hunger for a win and paid the price for it. Jim Kenyon began proceedings with excellent turnovers in the contacts and various rolling mauls. At these areas Kenyon grafted and a few attacks from the visitors were thwarted because of these turnovers. After setting up two attacking moves Will McQuaid had to go off injured. He was replaced by Alex Hill who started by winning some good turnovers in the lineout. The deadlock was broken after twenty five minutes when No.8 Owen Lawrence picked and ran, offloading to Chris Williams who ran another twenty metres and passed back inside to Lawrence who scored under the posts. Chris Hill added to the score sheet after some neat running and a pass, Hill scored in the corner. Chris Williams also scored and Charlie Loughman converted all three tries. Abergavenny's reply was brutal as they chose to keep the ball in the forwards and drive forward. Hereford were also guilty of not retreating ten metres when a penalty was awarded to Abergavenny. Captain Dave Thomas had to go off injured which moved blindside flanker Buadromo up to loosehead prop and outside centre Jenkins to the flank. Thankfully the boot of Morgan Goodhall gave Hereford a twelve point cushion and, after the visitors had racked up three tries, three conversions and two penalties, Hereford sailed through six points clear the winners. | SATURDAY 22 DECEMBER 2007 - BROMSGROVE 6 - 35 HEREFORD | |||||||||||||||
|
Hereford 2nd XV in third position, in
the inaugural North Midlands Reserve Team Southern Conference
travelled to second positioned Bromsgrove in a crucial match in their
endeavours to finish in the top three of the table in order to secure
a Division 1 place when the North & South Conferences divide to form
three leagues in the New Year. Hereford took the field in determined mood at Finstall Park and instantly announced their arrival pressing deep into Bromsgrove territory. Despite an early exchange of penalties neither side opened their account with the boot. Their initial commitment was rewarded however, when Hereford fullback Nathaniel Thomas seized his opportunity, when he collected the ball in open play, created space and sprinted to the line for an unconverted opening try 0-5. Hereford continued the frenetic pace and conceded a number of unnecessary penalties as enthusiasm got the better of good judgement. Bromsgrove duly converted a penalty conceded in front of the posts 3-5. Herefords commitment was creating good possession, Bromsgrove however remained combative and Herefords second try came from deep in defence when turnover possession created an opening deep in his own half for full back Thomas whose impressive speed saw him outpace the Bromsgrove defence from 60 metres 3-10 Bromsgrove recognised the threat posed by Herefords threequarters and endeavoured to drive through the centre field, keeping the game narrow. Their reward was limited to a single penalty 6-10 duly answered by Herefords Morgan Goodall 6-13. Thomas secured the third of his tries, capping a fine performance and taking Hereford into a 6-18 lead. Whilst Bromsgrove continued to compete throughout, Herefords victory took on a certain inevitability from this point. A dominant pack, consisting an effective mixture of youth and experience, was not to be denied, generating an abundance of well earned possession. This combined with creative halfbacks, confident and robust centres and irrepressible youth and pace in the back three, saw Hereford surge on, delivering two further tries by prominent centre Giles Scott and consistent performing wing Russell Williams, both converted by the in form Morgan Goodall, to add to an earlier penalty, making the final score Bromsgrove 6 Hereford 35. Promoted as Merit Table Champions and having supplied sterling support to the 1st XV in recent months, the Hereford 2nd XV ended the year in fine style. HEREFORD: N Thomas. D Savaker. G Scott T Jones (S Ellis) R Williams. G Preece. M Goodall. C Eastwood (B Hilstead) D Thomas (Capt) W Sparey. D Lewis. N Clarke C Lewins. W. Watkins. A Potter. |
