| SATURDAY 21 MARCH 2009 - CHELTENHAM NORTH 26 - 52 HEREFORD | |||||||||||||||||
|
With no league last week Hereford 3rds
travelled to Cheltenham North for a friendly which saw the
introduction of several players who usually play for the 4th XV. Right from the kick off Hereford dominated the game. Captain Owen Lawrence opened the scoring with some fine support work, with a second coming soon afterwards through full back Matt Hallett. Second row Mark Morrison contributed two tries in a fine first half performance. Morrison's brace being separated by a score from Dan Jenkins. In the second half, facing a stronger home team the scoring dried up whilst all of Hereford's replacements found their feet but with twenty minutes to go number 8 Caleb Haines went over closely followed by winger Chris Williams. Matt Millsom had a good day with the boot kicking 6 goals from 8 making the final score Hereford 3rds 52 Cheltenham North 26. Man of the Match went to one of the newcomers, Kieron Jones. This week Hereford face Woodrush in the Worcester and Hereford merit table. |

| SATURDAY 14 MARCH 2009 - HEREFORD 35 - 15 STOURBRIDGE GREYHOUNDS | |||||||||||||||||
|
In a bruising encounter at Wyeside
Hereford IIIs ran out five try winners against an extremely hardnosed
Stourbridge Greyhounds team to maintain their unbeaten season. Right
from the start Hereford showed their intent by scoring from the kick
off as Number eight Caleb Haines broke through and fed Chris Williams
who went in under the posts for the opening try. The very strong
Stourbridge pack fought back and dominated the much smaller and far
less experienced Hereford Eight at scrums. Injuries disrupted the home
team's performance and soon prop Guy Wigmore and scrum half Richard
Chandler had to be replaced by Mick Lowe, who shored up the creaking
scrum, and, making a return from injury, Morgan Goodall. Hereford
indiscipline gave the visitors a huge advantage in territory and
allowed them to score a brace of close range tries. The sides turned round with the Hereford team down 7-15 with a long half ahead of them. With the start of the second half though the game seemed to slowly turn Hereford's way as the away team lost some coherence as the home team refused to back down. Langi Buodromo handed the visitors an advantage as his indiscipline earned him ten minutes in the sin bin. However in his absence his colleagues played like men possessed determined not to surrender meekly. The introduction of Matt Hallett enthused the team as, with virtually his first touch of the game, he returned a wayward kick straight back to go in under the posts. With Hereford finally regaining their mojo they faced another set back as replacement prop Lowe hobbled off after receiving a blow to an ankle. James Watters went in for yet another long range try as the momentum swung to Hereford with two further tries from the centre pairing of Sam Louis and Ben Stephens, again a player returning from long term injury. All five Hereford tries were converted, one by Matt Milsom and the remaining four by Goodall, making the final score a hard earned 35-15 to the Wyesiders. At the final whistle both teams realised they had played in the hardest but probably the best game of rugby they had played this season. |

| SATURDAY 28 FEBRUARY 2009 - WALSALL 21 - 36 HEREFORD | |||||||||||||||||
|
Hereford Third XV travelled to Walsall
and despite playing a much bigger and experienced side came away with
a hard won victory to continue their unbeaten season. With the home club's second fifteen not having a fixture Hereford's youngsters had their eyes opened quickly with the pace and physicality of the opposition and struggled to secure as much clean ball from the breakdown as they would have wanted. Walsall opened the scoring after their number 8 picked up from a 5 metre scrum and fed their winger who, after juggling the ball, barrelled straight over his Hereford opponent Chris Williams. Hereford replied straight away but soon after frustration with Walsall's tactics at the breakdown hooker Nick Terry received a yellow card for illegal use of the boot. Walsall kicked the resulting penalty to make the score 8-5. Centre Richard Bonelle put Hereford into the lead after some fine back play. Unfortunately Hereford's concentration slipped and let Walsall in for another try. After the break Hereford decided to play some rugby and despite coming second best at scrum time scored two tries from birthday boy James Watters and a penalty try awarded after Bonelle chipped behind the defence and had a try scoring opportunity by foul play. After a long break in play to treat Hereford's scrum half Loughman the Wyesiders seemed to lose concentration once more and had to defend bravely against a forward onslaught. Finally pressure took its toll and Walsall scored to set up a tense last ten minutes. With an injury to prop Guy Wigmore though meant uncontested scrums nullifying the home team's only major advantage. Stand in flanker Matt Hallett ran the length of the pitch to seal a hard won victory 21-36. |

| SATURDAY 31 JANUARY 2009 - BROMSGROVE 0 - 66 HEREFORD | |||||||||||||||||
|
Hereford's third XV continued their rich
vein of form in the Hereford and Worcester Merit Table Division 2 when
they defeated Bromsgrove 4ths at Finstall Road. In blustery conditions
they quickly demoralised the home side with a fine display by both
forwards and backs. With number 8 Alex Kelso having a fine game with powerful running he opened the scoring with Charlie Loughman adding the goal. Loughman himself went over for a try soon after and from that kick off Caleb Haines drove into the heart of a disillusioned defence to feed centre Richard Bonelle to score under the sticks. Open side Bradley welling kept the pressure up with two tries after some more powerful running against a weak defensive effort form the home team. AS the whistle went to end the first stanza Hereford were leading 35-0. Playing up the slope at Bromsgrove the fleet footed Hereford backs found it difficult to hit the gaps at pace as they had done in the first half, but the forwards worked hard to get them into positions from which they could strike. Man of the match Guy Wigmore dominated his opposite number and made good ground while carrying the ball, ably supported by his front row colleagues Nick Terry and Keith Kinsey. Mark Morrison playing at lock gave an impressive performance scoring two tries in the second half. Loughman claimed another try as Kelso added another to his tally. Winger James Watters scored the coup de grace as Bromsgrove capitulated in the fourth quarter. Charlie Loughman kicked an 80% success rate making the final score 66-0, securing Hereford's position at the top of their Merit Table. |

| SATURDAY 17 JANUARY 2009 - OLD HALESONIANS 10 - 31 HEREFORD | |||||||||||||||||
|
After an enforced break of 6 weeks
Hereford 3rd XV returned to action hoping to maintain their unbeaten
season at Old Halesonians. With several players returning from long
term injuries there was a great deal of disjointed play in the first
half as the home team tried to dominate possession with ten man rugby.
The Hereford backs looked dangerous whenever they got the ball and
eventually after a chip through by hooker Fin Williams, Chris Williams
went in for the opening score. Soon after Richard Bonelle scored with
a devastating break from inside centre. Flanker Alex Hill crossed the
line for the third try of the half with scrum half Charlie Loughman
finally getting some success with the goal. With some mighty defence
the Hereford pack kept Old Halesonians to only a penalty goal. In a much more fluid second half Hereford opened up the home team's line with tries from Owen Laurence and Loughman, who scored after a powerful run from replacement Number 8 Brad Welling. Loughman converted both these tries in a Man of the Match performance. Old Hales scored a last consolation try to make the final score Old Halesonians 10 Hereford 3rd XV 31. |

| SATURDAY 6 DECEMBER 2008 - DROITWICH 11 - 29 HEREFORD | |||||||||||||||||
|
Hereford Thirds travelled to Droitwich
2nds expecting a hard match against a team top of Merit Table Division
One. In a first half in which Hereford did not play up to their
potential Droitwich scored an early try when one of their bigger
players ran the length of the field evading all tacklers to touchdown.
Going behind for the first time this season seem to ignite the
youngsters from Hereford and centre Dan Jenkins crashed over to draw
level. Poor discipline allowed Droitwich to kick two penalties before
the break ensuring that as the teams turned round Hereford trailled
7-11. In the second stanza Hereford increased the pressure through some strong running from man of the match Caleb Haines and Jenkins eventually forcing the Droitwich right winger into making an atrocious feet first lunge resulting in the home team being forced to play with only 14 men after his rather lenient yellow card. Chris Hill took advantage scoring under the posts. With an injection of impact players Matt Hallett and Chris Bayliss, Hereford continued piling on the pressure resulting in a score for Hallett and a second for Jenkins with a barnstorming run from half way. Chris Williams added the coup-de-grace with another try. Outside half Will Bolt add two goals to make the final score Droitwich 2nds 11 Hereford 3rds 29. |

| SATURDAY 29 NOVEMBER 2008 - HEREFORD 57 - 0 ROSS | |||||||||||||||||
|
Playing at home
for the first time since 13 October, Hereford RFC 3rd XV continued
their unbeaten season with a Merit Table victory over local rivals
Ross at Wyeside. After a great start with winger Chris Williams
scoring within 2 minutes of the kick off the home team found it
difficult to put any phases of play together in the first half as Ross
successfully slowed the ball down at the break down. The Wyesiders
wasted the majority of quick ball by making wrong decisions at crucial
times despite having total dominance at the scrum. When they did play
the style of rugby to which they are suited they managed to score
three other first half tries through Tom Steer, Alex Hill and another
for Williams who went off at the break. A much more fluid performance in the second half, probably due to a combination Ross opting for passive scrums and an injection of more pace, Hereford's young players started to run with more authority adding a further five tries scored by man of the match Dan Jenkins (2), wing James Watters, prop Langi Buadromo and a second for flanker Alex Hill. Scrum half Dan Phillips had a great day with the boot landing 5 from 6 attempts but Matt Hallett had a 100% kicking performance with 1 from 1. Final score Hereford 3rds 57 - Ross 2nds 0. |

| SATURDAY 15 NOVEMBER 2008 - STOURBRIDGE GREYHOUNDS 22 - 33 HEREFORD | |||||||||||||||||
|
In a closely fought top of the table
clash Hereford 3rds defeated league leaders Ledbury 2nds at Ross Road.
In a first half when Ledbury slowed the ball down effectively at the
breakdown Hereford's free flowing backs struggled to dominate the game
and both teams matched each other for scores with the away team
eventually managing to open up a 21-14 lead at the interval. In the second stanza Hereford's forwards dominated the home pack and began to provide quick ball for the backs to use. Hereford pulled away with tries from winger Williams and man of the match Alex Hill. The pack showed their supremacy at the scrum with a push over try for Alex Kelso. Out half Will Bolt again produced a fine display with the boot kick 5 goals, to make the final score 45-19. (Try Scorers; Hill 2. Williams 2; Steer, Leccia and Kelso. Goals; Bolt 5) |

| SATURDAY 15 NOVEMBER 2008 - STOURBRIDGE GREYHOUNDS 22 - 33 HEREFORD | |||||||||||||||||
| Hereford RFC's Third XV stretched their unbeaten season to eight matches after a hard fought game against Stourbridge Greyhounds. Tries were scored by Chris Hill (2), Alex Hill, James Watters and a fantastic individual try by Dan Jenkins. Will Bolt kicked 4 from 5 to make the final score Stourbridge Greyhound 22-Hereford 3rds 33. | |||||||||||||||||
| SATURDAY 1 NOVEMBER 2008 - STOURPORT 12 - 52 HEREFORD | |||||||||||||||||
|
Hereford Thirds stretched their unbeaten
run of games to seven with a convincing 52-12 Merit table win at
Stourport. Tom Steer started the scoring after ghosting past several
Stourport defenders to score under the posts. After a kick through by
Stourport Chris Hill threw a speculative pass in an attempt to create
space but the Stourport left winger was quick to intercept and ran in
from 40 metres. This gift seemed to spur the Hereford team into action
and from a scrum, number 8, Caleb Haines, picked up and ran strongly,
fending off four defenders to score from 55 metres. Hereford added two
further tries in the first stanza scored by captain Owen Lawrence and
winger James Watters. The first moments of the second half saw Laurie Jenkins grab another brace of tries to top off another strong personal performance before Stourport scored a pushover try using their weight advantage. Hereford again fought back strongly and started to play the style of rugby they have, as a group, been striving toward all season. The victory was completed with further tries from Lawrence and full back Chris Hill. Out side half Will Bolt kicked five goals and flanker Alex Hill slotted the last conversion of the game to make the final score 52-12. Try scorers: Tom Steer; Caleb Haines; James Watters; Laurie Jenkins 2; Owen Lawrence 2 and Chris Hill. Conversions Will Bolt 5 Alex Hill 1. |

| SATURDAY 18 OCTOBER 2008 - HEREFORD 84 - 0 OLD HALESONIANS | |||||||||||||||||
|
Hereford Thirds Fifteen again faced
under-strength opposition in the Worcester and Hereford Merit Table
League Two fixture against Old Halesonians Thirds at Wyeside. However,
the young Hereford team were in no mood to give the travelling team
any sympathy with another powerful display of rugby from all 20
players involved. The forwards dominated the opposition at set piece
and although Halesonians were able to slow the ball down at maul time
the Wyeside eight were quickly able to gain the upper hand at rucks
and started to generate quick ball for the backs to run on to at pace.
Tom Steer made a welcome return to outside centre with the opening try
which was soon followed by two from wing Chris Williams, another
outstanding finish by full back Matt Hallett and scrum half Chris
Bayllis running the last score of the first half in to make the score
47-0. In the second half, with all the changes made and Chris Hill and Tom Steer electing to play for Old Halesonians, the game became another feast of attacking rugby with more tries from Williams, who ended up with a game total of 3, Bayliss who scored 3 in total, second row Chris Conlon and winger James Watters. Despite a lack of fluidity due to the changes Hereford continued to pull away from a valiant Old Halesonian team to finish the game 84-0, with Man of the Match Will Bolt returning a 100% goal record of 11 conversions with Hallett adding the other goal. Hereford now look forward to what will hopefully be a sterner challenge when they face Bromsgrove Thirds in a friendly at Wyeside this coming Saturday. |

| SATURDAY 11 OCTOBER 2008 - HEREFORD 50 - 19 CINDERFORD | |||||||||||||||||
|
Hereford Thirds again struggled to find
their feet in a highly competitive match against a young Cinderford
Fourth team. In a mirror image of their last outing it took the home
team 30 minutes to start playing the rugby their loyal crowd had seen
over the opening month of the season. When they did find their game
the young players finally started to score some points after trailing
to the boot of the Cinderford fly half for much of the first half. In
the latter stages of the opening stanza they got back into the style
of play they enjoy and managed to score three unanswered tries by
wings Chris Hill and Chris Williams and by flanker Laurie Jenkins, who
was having another outstanding game along with his back row partners
in crime Caleb Haines and Owen Lawrence. They started the second half in a familiar slow manner and it was not until Cinderford pulled back to 21-19 that Hereford decided they wanted to win the match. In a period of ten minutes they put together some great tries from Jenkins, Williams, who was to benefit four times from some great play from Hallet and a breathtaking, barnstorming 70 metre kick return from Haines. Hallett converted 5 of the tries to make the final score 50-19. |

| SATURDAY 4 OCTOBER 2008 - HEREFORD 71 - 7 BROMSGROVE | |||||||||||||||||
|
Hereford Thirds finally started their
league programme against an under-strength Bromsgrove fourth fifteen.
After a disappointing start to the match Hereford eventually began to
put some phases of play together and the backs used the ball very
affectively. In the last twenty minute of the first stanza, scrum half
Chris Bayliss scored a brace opening Hereford's account. These were
closely followed with scores by full back Matthew Hallett, and centre
Dan Jenkins. In the second half the flood gates were well and truly open with Hereford seemingly able to score at will with entertaining, fast-flowing rugby. Bayliss again went over along with winger, Chris Williams, Captain Owen Lawrence, flanker Laurie Jenkins and a second for Hallett. Bromsgrove fought back with some powerful scrummaging and forward play which resulted in a close range consolation try. Hereford's pressure was relentless and in the dying moments of the game Tom Steer eventually went over the line. Charlie Loughtman, Hereford's fly half had a good success rate with the boot kicking seven conversions, with Bayliss adding to his personal tally by kicking the last goal to make it Hereford 71-Bromsgrove 7. Credit should be given to Hereford's prop Mick Lowe who played the entire match for Bromsgrove since they were unable to raise a full front row. |

| SATURDAY 20 SEPTEMBER 2008 - OLD YARDLEIANS 24 - 59 HEREFORD | |||||||||||||||||
|
Following up their season opening win
against Bromyard, Hereford thirds travelled to Old Yardleians and
achieved a convincing victory full of exciting fast flowing rugby. Opening up with a try ran from behind their own line by Chris Hill and finished by Tom Steer, they continued in this vein with James Watters scoring after an incisive burst from Owen Lawrence. Old Yardleians fought back with their powerful forwards trundling over from a penalty only 5 metres out. Tom Steer again scored, this time from 50 metres. Yardleians replied with another forwards' try showing they had not given up the game. After the break Hereford kept the relentless pressure on and with another length of the pitch effort Chris Hill went over. Following some quick thinking by stand-in winger Laurie Jenkins, Hereford scored again. Again though Old Yardleians replied. Alex Kelso initiated another rapid movement of the ball and after some great interchanges of the ball Jenkins went over. Hereford scored a further two tries, Lagi Buadrom going over from 5 metres for his first try for Hereford, and with a final flourish Laurie Jenkins made a dazzling 50 metre run and unselfishly passed to man of the match Tom Steer. With outside half having a near perfect day with the boot the final score was Hereford Thirds 59 Old Yardleians 24. |
