Hereford Third XV  39 - 33  Redditch Second XV

Wyeside, 23 November 2002

Worcestershire & Herefordshire Merit Table Pool A

DESPITE holding a commanding 22-point interval advantage, Hereford had to withstand a spirited second-half fight-back before achieving victory in an exciting home friendly.

The Wyesiders made a flying start and Jason Lewis, in his first game of the season, sailed over for the opening try and then Finbar Heavens added the extra points. Hereford extended their lead when Colts player Harry Jenkins dashed over the try line following a maul and Heavens soon crashed over for an unconverted touchdown to put the Wyesiders 17-0 in front after only 20 minutes.

The Worcestershire outfit finally opened their account when they were awarded a penalty try with their first attack but they failed with the simple conversion. Hereford immediately returned the pressure and, after a solid drive from Mark Osborne was rewarded with a try, Ali McCall bagged a touchdown on the stroke of half-time to give the Wyesiders a convincing 27-5 lead at the break.

Hereford made a couple of changes at the interval and they were rocked in the opening minutes of the half when the Redditch number 10 scored an excellent converted try. Joe Alekna swiftly added another converted try and he brought his team to within one point of the Hereford tally when he crashed over for his second converted try.

After squandering such a significant points advantage, Hereford needed an immediate boost and a slick move between Ben Jenkins, Heavens, Jason Lewis and Dave Amos set up the giant Mark Steele to run in a 30-metre try.

Hereford kept the visitors on the back foot and sealed the victory when a quick break from John Jenkins resulted in a simple try for Dave Amos, which took the home side's advantage to 39-26. Redditch were not finished, however, and Chris Monall grabbed a late try to complete the scoring and round off an entertaining match.
