OLD Laurentians ran out narrow
winners in an exciting friendly which saw 39 points scored in an end-to-end
opening half. The teams drew 22-22 in their last meeting and it was no real
surprise that this game started at a fast and furious pace. Hereford made
only three mistakes in the first half but paid the price of three tries.
The visitors opened the scoring with a converted try and then applied pressure on the Hereford defence for a 10-minute period. The Wyesiders swiftly returned the pressure but they were turned over at a ruck and the visitors extended their advantage with a second converted try. Trailing 14-0 after 20 minutes, Hereford sprung into life and good forward play paid dividends. After good handling from Lyndon Day and Jason Lewis, the ball was shipped out to Hassan Fazel who crashed over and Day added the conversion. Hereford launched another attack a minute later and were in a promising position when a visiting player made an interception to score Laurentians' third try. The home side responded immediately, scoring their second try through flanker Ben Adams, and Dave Bost then crashed over to bring Hereford within two points of the visitors at 19-17. The scoring in an enthralling first-half had not finished, however, and on the stroke of half-time the visitors kicked a penalty to move 22-17 in front. Although the second half failed to live up to the excitement of the first, Hereford can gain satisfaction from scoring the only try through Lewis, while the visitors collected two penalties. |
