  SATURDAY 17 APRIL 2010 - HEREFORD  40 - 25  BROMSGROVE
In conditions suited to open football Hereford Rugby Club hosted Worcestershire rivals Bromsgrove at Wyeside. Both sides made the most of the conditions to entertain the crowd with some creative play, running in 8 tries between them. Early end to end play resulted in Hereford taking a six point lead within 10 minutes through two penalty goals by Morgan Goodall. On 34 minutes Bromsgrove winger Richard Stockholm received a yellow card for a deliberate knock on and Morgan Goodall landed the resulting penalty. The first try came on 35 minutes when Hereford wing Morgan Goodall broke a tackle and crossed under the posts, he added the extra points himself. Shortly after, Guy Thompson received ten minutes in the bin for a high tackle and John Critchlow gave Bromsgrove their first points from the penalty. Just before half time Hereford increased their lead when, after a good handling movement. skipper Matt Pritchard broke away, his pass found Will Watkins following up who touched down wide out for the second try, the conversion attempt was narrowly wide. At the break Hereford had a healthy lead of 21 points to 3.
Early in the second period scrum half Dan Phillips, who put in another good performance, added a try from close quarters after the Hereford pack had subjected the Bromsgrove line to a spell of intense pressure. Morgan Goodall added the conversion. During the final 30 minutes Bromsgrove had marginally the better of things with tries from Mark Coulson, Nigel Burrows and Richard Stockholm, two of which were converted by John Critchlow who also added a penalty. Hereford though increased their tally with two excellent tries. The first on 60 minutes when Morgan Goodall gathered his own kick ahead to register Hereford’s fourth try wide out on the right, he was unable to add the extra points. The final try of the game, just before the final whistle, was scored by Guy Thompson who ran in under the posts following an excellent break by Sean Day on the left wing. Morgan Goodall rounded off an excellent game by adding the extra points to give Hereford a grand win by 40 points to 25.

  SATURDAY 10 APRIL 2010 - NEWPORT (SALOP)  32 - 14  HEREFORD
In a typical end of season game, Newport who needed the points to ensure they avoided relegation, showed a greater will to win than an error prone Hereford side. Hereford opened the scoring in the fifth minute with a Morgan Goodall penalty goal before the first of a series of defensive errors let Newport in for their first try. Both sides tried to play a passing game in excellent conditions but handling errors prevented Hereford adding to their score until on twenty minutes when scrum half Dan Phillips touched down after forward pressure on the Newport line. The sides exchanged penalty successes, Goodall converting after a Newport player received a yellow card for an offence at the breakdown. Despite the loss of a player Newport scored their second try which was converted to give them a fifteen points to eleven half time lead.
Early in the second half indecision amongst the Hereford backs allowed Newport in for their third try which was converted from in front of the posts. Hereford continued to make errors and eventually after Goodall had landed a third penalty goal a Hereford player missed to find touch and Newport scored a fourth try which was converted. During the final period Hereford mounted a number of attacks during which Jamie Bulluck went over under the posts only for the effort to be disallowed. Newport closed the game off with a penalty goal giving them safety for another year. The pack won a good share of ball but Hereford’s game was again riddled with handling and kicking errors.

  SATURDAY 3 APRIL 2010 - HEREFORD  7 - 41  AMPTHILL
In heavy rain a Hereford side depleted by touring commitments, entertained league leaders Ampthill. The visitors started strongly and built up a 24 point lead within 30 minutes through three converted tries and a penalty goal. Ampthill applied constant pressure on the Hereford defence until on 30 minutes Guy Thompson hacked on a Gary Preece kick ahead for Eric Rabuka to pick up and plunge over for a try which Gary Preece converted. For the remainder of the half Ampthill continued to dominate exchanges but determined Hereford tackling restricted them to one further unconverted try and at the interval the score was 7 points to 29.
From the start of the second half the home team, with forwards Billy Sparey, Will Watkins and Andy Potter in the van, took the game to their opponents and it was not until the 72 minute that the visitors added to their score with a converted try and finally closed off the game with an unconverted try to win by 41 points to 7. The home side included a number of young and inexperienced players who put up a game performance against older and much more experienced opposition. In particular wings Finn Ralph and Kyle Burrell drafted in from the colts squad and 2nd XV regulars scrum half Dan Phillips and full back Charlie Loughman all put in excellent performances whilst the older and more experienced players led by example. All the Hereford team can be proud of their contribution and there were times during the second half when the Ampthill line could have been seriously threatened had it not been for the dreadful conditions.

  SATURDAY 27 MARCH 2010 - HEREFORD  15 - 22  MALVERN
Malvern, who were desperate for points in their battle against the threat of relegation, were the sharper side right from the start and opened the scoring with a try from Don Murphy converted by William Farris. The Hereford pack won plenty of good possession only to see much of it kicked away and a number of good chances missed through careless handling. Half way through the first half Kyle Burrell, making his first league start, burst away on the right wing for a good try which Dean Powell converted to level the scores. Hereford continued to spurn chances and before the break Malvern capitalised by scoring two further tries by Tom Longley and Dave Beggs, the first of which was converted by Farris. At half time the score was 7 points to 19 and Malvern looked to be on course for a big win.
The second half started with Matt Pritchard having been replaced by Nick Harrison and the familiar Hereford second half revival began. Hereford put more pressure on the Malvern defence but errors continued to frustrate. A further replacement saw Billy Grisman replaced by Gary Preece and on 56 minutes Malvern lost hooker Andy Murphy yellow carded for repeated offences at the breakdown. Shortly after Dean Powell reduced the deficit with a penalty goal but it was not until well into the final quarter that Hereford crossed the line for a second time. This time it was Guy Thompson capping another impressive performance with a try which Dean Powell was unable to convert. This time for all the effort put in, the second half revival was not to succeed and shortly before the final whistle scrum half Tom Longley dropped a goal to seal the result for Malvern. Kyle Burrell is to be congratulated for an extremely promising game on Hereford’s right wing.
Next week, with a number of first choice players away on tour, Hereford will face a tough game with league leaders Ampthill at Wyeside in a rearranged fixture.

  SATURDAY 20 MARCH 2010 - LUCTONIANS  5 - 5  HEREFORD
In wet conditions not suited to running rugby these two local rivals slogged out a battle of mainly forward attrition. As the score line suggests neither side deserved to win or lose. The Hereford side were on top in the first half and scored an unconverted try through hooker Gareth Miles shortly before half time following a period of forward pressure on the Luctonian line.
Luctonians came out in the second half with renewed vigour and within five minutes had equalised with an unconverted try. The game continued to flow from end to end but with Luctonians having slightly the better of exchanges. As one would expect this was a full blooded encounter following on a worthy tradition and defences were generally on top. A sad side to proceedings saw a Luctonians player shown a red card and two Hereford players yellow, all in the first half.

  SATURDAY 13 MARCH 2010 - HEREFORD  27 - 26  LONGTON
Hereford started brightly putting the Longton defence under early pressure. After only 5 minutes the home side won a lineout near the Longton line, the forwards drove over and Gareth Miles touched down for the opening score. Richie Rees converted with an excellent kick from a difficult angle. For the next 30 minutes the play moved from end to end with both sides creating chances. However Longton were the more clinical in finishing and on 6 minutes a handling movement resulted in a well constructed try which was converted. Ten minutes later Hereford were penalised, Longton kicked into the corner, won the line out and drove over and the conversion was successful from wide out. On 20 minutes Longton had built up a commanding lead of 12 points with a further converted try from a rolling maul after a penalty against Hereford for failing to release after a tackle. Hereford continued to create chances and after 35 minutes Simon Sabel following up a Colin Osbourne kick ahead which took a wicked bounce, crossed the Longton line unopposed and Richie Rees added the extra points. Shortly before half time Longton lost a forward, yellow carded after an offence at the break down and Richie Rees converted the resulting penalty. This took Hereford to within 2 points at the break, 17-19.
The game resumed with end to end play, but shortly after the restart Hereford lost Gareth Miles for ten minutes for an offence at the break down. After 50 minutes Hereford conceded another penalty and Longton now restored to full strength opted for a scrum from which they drove over for a converted try. Hereford continued to have the better of exchanges and after 65 minutes sustained pressure caused a Longton back to miss finding touch and Keiron Hallam pounced on the error to score wide out,  Richie Rees converted with another good kick. Further pressure on the Longton line was eventually rewarded with a penalty which Richie Rees converted from a wide angle. Longton responded by putting the Hereford defence under extreme pressure during the final ten minutes and were rewarded with a kickable penalty. They inexplicably opted for a scrum, but the home defence held out to claim a narrow victory by 27 points to 26.

  SATURDAY 6 MARCH 2010 - KETTERING  16 - 18  HEREFORD
This was a match of two contrasting halves. Hereford started in the now familiar fashion by allowing Kettering to take charge for the whole of the first period. The game was 20 minutes old before Hereford penetrated the Kettering 22 and their game was characterised by standing off at the tackle and poor kicking. Kettering opened their score on 11 minutes with a well struck penalty followed 5 minutes later by a converted try. On 26 minutes Ben Hillstead received a yellow card for an offence at the breakdown and Kettering converted the resulting penalty. Determined effort by the Hereford pack saw out Hillstead’s enforced rest without conceding further points but shortly before half time yet another penalty took the home side into the break with a lead of 16 points.
The second half revealed a totally different Hereford performance, the tackles were put in confidently and the ball kept in hand. After a period of good pressure Dean Powell kicked Hereford’s first points from a penalty. Shortly after Hereford won a lineout close to the Kettering line and the ball was popped up to Keiron Hallam who crossed near the corner. Dean Powell was unable to convert from wide out but the score had been narrowed to 16 points to 8 and Hereford were now totally in control. After 61 minutes Dean Powell reduced the arrears further with an excellent penalty goal and the Hereford pressure was now telling. One of the Kettering centres offended at the breakdown and was shown a yellow card, Dean Powell was unable to convert the resulting penalty. Hereford continued to dominate play and a well constructed move resulted in second row forward Jamie Bullock capping an excellent performance in the Hereford pack by charging over for a try. The scores were now level at 16 points each and Dean Powell stepped up to slot over the conversion to give his side a narrow 2 point margin. Kettering came back in the final few minutes to put pressure on the visitors defence but they held firm for a well earned victory.
A further two young players made encouraging debuts, Laurie Jenkins making a first start in the back row and Owen Lawrence coming off the bench in the second half. Two other young and relatively inexperienced players Dan Savager and Charlie Loughman played a full part in the team’s success.

  SATURDAY 27 FEBRUARY 2010 - LUTON  22 - 24  HEREFORD
A poor 15 minute spell at the start of this game, where the home team scored three tries, converting one, cost Hereford the game. The away team dominated the last twenty minutes of the first half, with some good driving forward play and positional kicking from fly half Dean Powell. Hereford's hooker Gareth Miles crashed over from a quick free kick 5 yards from the line, which Powell converted.
Luton began the second half with the former Northampton centre Matt Allen diving over from short range after 7 minutes. Hereford then dominated the rest of the game. The forwards began to dominate the scrum and were awarded a penalty try, for their efforts after 20 minutes after a  collapsed scrum on the try line, Powell converted. The away side continued to dominate possession and Luton received 3 yellow cards in the second half for killing the ball at rucks. Hereford spent the last quarter of the game in their opponents 22, with Luton conceding 17 penalties in this period, however they could not break the line.
Two young players made encouraging debuts, winger Kye Burrell, who was denied a try three times with tackles close to the line and No 8 Brad Talbot who came on for the last 15 minutes.

  SATURDAY 20 FEBRUARY 2010 - HEREFORD  24 - 7  KENILWORTH
Hereford came close to taking the lead early in this game at Wyeside when Ben Probert charged down a Kenilworth clearance kick only to be beaten to the touch down by another defender. Hereford were the more skilful side and had more attacking ideas despite resorting too often to aimless kicking. After 18 minutes Hereford took the lead when flank forward Guy Thompson intercepted a loose Kenilworth pass on the half way line to run in the first try which was converted by Dean Powell. Hereford are still conceding too many penalties and on 26 minutes Ben Hillstead was yellow carded for pulling down a maul. Giving away far too many penalties is preventing the team developing a continuity of play and they are unable to maintain consistent pressure on the opposition. Just before the break Kenilworth had their only real chance of the half but Russell Clarke was unable to convert a penalty opportunity.
In the second period Hereford increased their control of the game and on 49 minutes Richard Rees touched down wide out after a bout of slick passing. Dean Powell was unable to add the extra points. Shortly after Hereford made a couple of substitutions when Colin Osborne and Jamie Bullock replaced Gary Preece and Nick Harrison. A couple of minutes later Hereford were awarded a kickable penalty but skipper Matt Pritchard opted for a scrum, they won the scrum and from the forward drive which followed Matt touched down for the third Hereford try, Dean Powell was unable to convert. Hereford continued to exert pressure on the Kenilworth line and after another good handling movement Guy Thompson crossed for his second try of the game. This time Dean Powell was able to add the extra points. Hereford had now collected their fourth try and earned a bonus point but took their foot of the gas for a time. However, some sloppy defence let Kenilworth in for a consolation try from Alex Stajka which was converted by Russell Clarke. Hereford finished the game in total control and a result which had never been in doubt was duly achieved.

  SATURDAY 13 FEBRUARY 2010 - HINCKLEY  30 - 3  HEREFORD
Hereford started the game playing up the slope and against the wind in fine form. After 10 minutes Dean Powell landed a penalty to give Hereford the lead for the first and only time in the game. For the whole of the first half play was even with both sides trying to play an attractive running game. On 21 minutes Hinckley scrum half Joe Glover kicked a penalty to level the scores and three minutes later landed another to take the lead. Both sides conceded a number of penalties and both Powell and Glover missed the chance to increase their side’s score. Hereford had a number of try scoring chances but all came to nothing with final passes going astray.
The break arrived with Hinckley leading by just 3 points and it looked set for a tightly contested second 40 minutes. This was not to be, Hinckley’s running game began to click and Hereford’s usually strong defence wavered. Seven minutes into the second half Richard Harris scored Hinckley’s first try which Glover failed to convert. At this point Hereford replaced flank forward Guy Thompson with Alex Kelso. The substitution did not have the desired effect as Hinckley number eight, Ben Ashfield crossed for their second try minutes later, this time Glover added the conversion. Hereford made a couple more substitutions with Ali McColl and Sam Bishop replacing Matt Ing and Harry Jenkins. Hereford had few chances in the second half and those they did make were spoilt by errors. In the final ten minutes Hinckley scored 2 more tries through Guy Swadling and Alex Smith, Glover adding the conversion to Swadling’s try.
Hereford can take some positives from the game the forwards won sufficient ball especially in the first half and enough opportunities were created to have made a difference to the result had the finishing been better.

  SATURDAY 6 FEBRUARY 2010 - HEREFORD  20 - 28  LUCTONIANS
On a lovely day for rugby the two local rivals put on a great show for the 1,100 plus crowd.
Hereford started in traditional style conceding a well worked try in the 4th minute of the game. Luctonians converted the try and in the 8th minute converted a penalty given against Hereford for an offence at the breakdown, Hereford responded on 14 minutes with a try of their own run in by Sean Day, his 14th of the season, and converted by Dean Powell. Shortly after Sean retired from the fray with an injury thus removing arguably Hereford's most potent attacking resource. After 32 minutes Dean Powell landed a penalty to level the scores and 6 minutes later landed another penalty to give Hereford the lead for the first time in the match. However this lead was short lived as shortly after Luctonians kicked a penalty after another breakdown offence. The half time break arrived, after Hereford having the better of the final 20 minutes, with the opponents tied at thirteen points each.
Shortly after the break Billy Grisman was shown a yellow card for a late tackle and the heavier Luctonians pack began to make their presence felt. On 47 minutes Lucs retook the lead with a penalty and 6 minutes later their pack put in extra effort resulting in a push over try which was converted. Not to be outdone the Hereford team showed a deal of character in taking the game once more to the Luctonians and after a period of pressure Dean Powell touched down for a try wideout on the right which he converted with an excellent kick. Hereford continued to exert pressure to no avail, a number of excellent chances were created but the Luctonian defence remained strong. With less than 10 minutes to go the Lucs fullback received a yellow card which raised the hopes of the Hereford supporters only for them to be dashed by a final Luctonian try, this time not converted.
So ended this resumption of fixtures with our old friends and rivals from Kingsland, with a win for Lucs by 20 points to 28, a grand game which could have gone either way and which will whet the appetite for the return match on the 20 March 2010.

  SATURDAY 30 JANUARY 2010 - SOUTH LEICESTER  3 - 28  HEREFORD
Hereford got a splendid reward for the long journey to Leicester returning with a comprehensive victory and a winning bonus point for the second away trip in succession.
The first period was strewn with errors and severe punishment yet again, for offences at the breakdown. After 15 minutes prop Ben Probert received a yellow card for failing to release after the tackle for the second occasion. This could have cost Hereford dearly, but shortly after, a well placed chip ahead from outside half Dean Powell was hacked on by Sean Day, who used his pace to beat the South Leicester cover to touch down for the first try converted by Dean Powell. On 26 minutes the South Leicester outside half Mark Lord converted a penalty given for another offence at the breakdown. For the remaining 15 minutes of the first period, Hereford remained in control but were unable to add to their score.
The second half was almost another game, the Hereford side conceded few penalties and their exciting backs started to play with more fluency. On 44 minutes centre Richie Rees crossed for a try to round off an excellent handling movement and this was swiftly followed on 46 minutes when Sean Day ran in his thirteenth try of the season. Both were converted by Dean Powell. Hereford continued to control things and Nick Harrison was prominent in claiming good lineout ball. South Leicester’s main attacking strength is their big pack which launched a number of driving mauls which the Hereford pack countered well particularly in the second half. The final score to clinch the bonus point came in the 75th minute when Colin Osborne touched down after a break by Sean Day the extra points being added by Dean Powell. Matt Ing making his first start in the second row had a promising game and all in all it was a grand day out.

  SATURDAY 16 JANUARY 2010 - BEDFORD ATHLETIC  17 - 30  HEREFORD
After six weeks of enforced inactivity due to the weather Hereford Rugby Club got their season restarted on Saturday with a visit to Bedford and a 30 points to 17 victory over Bedford Athletic. Hereford were always on top, with their pack in control, but evidence of “ring rustiness” showed in a number of lapses in concentration allowing the Bedford team to restrict the margin of victory.
Hereford opened the scoring in the 8th minute when outside half Colin Osborne landed a penalty followed ten minutes later when newcomer Guy Thompson touched down wide out after a forward drive, the conversion attempt was unsuccessful. On 28 minutes scrum half Gary Preece crossed for an unconverted try taking the score to 13 points to nil. During the first period Hereford players were guilty of missing out on a number of excellent scoring opportunities.
Shortly after half time winger Sean Day scored his eleventh try of the season which Colin Osborne was unable to convert from a narrow angle. Within a couple of minutes the Bedford left winger intercepted a loose Hereford pass to run in under the posts for a converted try and shortly after Bedford landed a penalty when Hereford were penalised for an offence at the breakdown. With the score now 10 – 18 Bedford after struggling all game felt they were back in the game until Colin Osborne ran in a well worked try for centre Richard Rees to add the conversion and flanker Guy Thompson to add his second try. For the final ten minutes Bedford had probably their best period of the game and finally got a consolation try in the last minute. The final score of 17 points to 30 did not flatter a Hereford side which controlled the game well but were somewhat less than clinical in their finishing.

  SATURDAY 17 OCTOBER 2009 - HEREFORD  29 - 20  SOUTH LEICESTER
South Leicester took an early lead with a penalty before Adam Knight crossed for a Hereford try which Dean Powell converted. The game developed into a series of driving mauls from South Leicester which forced Hereford to commit a number of offences eventually leading to a second penalty success for South Leicester. Some concerted pressure by Hereford later in the half resulted in a try for Gareth Miles converted by Dean Powell who also added a penalty goal before the interval.
Hereford commenced the second half 17 points to 6 ahead and soon added to their lead with an unconverted try from Ceiron Griffiths. The run of play continued as in the first period with South setting up driving mauls which the Hereford team did well to control. However some casual defence by Hereford allowed South in for a converted try. Hereford added a bonus point try when Dean Powell ran in a fourth after a good handling movement. Further casual play let South in for a second converted try but the game ended with a victory for Hereford by 29 points to 20.
Hereford battled well to get a good supply of ball against a pack with a reputation for robust play. The injury bug struck again with Billy Grisman having to leave the field in the second half.

  SATURDAY 3 OCTOBER 2009 - HEREFORD  66 - 12  BEDFORD ATHLETIC
Bedford Athletic, playing with the wind and slope, put in a stubborn performance to hold Hereford to a half time lead of just two points. Adam Knight opened the scoring with a try which Dean Powell converted, Bedford came back with two tries within 10 minutes one of which was converted. The play remained fairly even until after half an hour Gary Preece finished off a movement involving forwards and backs, which Dean Powell converted to give Hereford an interval lead of 14 points to 12.
The second half with Hereford gaining the advantage of wind and slope became a procession of home tries. A further 52 points were added with 2 tries each for Adam Knight, Sean Day, Adam Gwynne and Harry Jenkins. Dean Powell added the points to 5 of the tries with Colin Osbourne kicking one conversion while Dean was having attention for a minor knock.

  SATURDAY 26 SEPTEMBER 2009 - AMPTHILL  50 - 8  HEREFORD
A greatly depleted Hereford team missing key players went down to a heavy defeat at Ampthill. During the first half, Hereford with a try from Adam Knight and a penalty from Sean Day stayed in touch until shortly before half time. For the first 20 minutes after the break Ampthill used their forward dominance and well drilled back play to take the score to 50 points to 8 into the 4th quarter. During the last quarter the Hereford forwards showed the determination we expect from them and Ampthill were unable to add to their score.
In general the Hereford tackling was of high standard but a number of errors contributed to the defeat. Ampthill are undoubtedly a strong team, well drilled and prepared and should figure prominently in the promotion race.

  SATURDAY 19 SEPTEMBER 2009 - HEREFORD  24 - 22  LUTON
Hereford RFC achieved a narrow but well deserved victory over promotion hopefuls Luton at Wyeside this afternoon in a grand game of attacking rugby. Dean Powell opened the scoring for Hereford with a penalty after 16 minutes. This galvanised Luton into action and they replied with a try by Mike Posthumus converted by Dan Howells just 3 minutes later. After 24 minutes Dan Howells landed a penalty for Luton taking the score to 3 - 10. The Hereford pack then put Luton under sustained pressure resulting in 2 yellow cards for a series of slowing down of the ball offences. Shortly afterwards following a scrum on the Luton line Ali McColl crashed over for the first Hereford try to which Dean Powell added the conversion. With half time now approaching the Hereford supporters were hopeful of crossing over level but Luton scrum half Dan MacDonald crossed for a try which Dan Howells converted.  At half time then the score stood at 10 - 17.
Hereford started the second half in determined fashion and after 44 minutes Sean Day scored a well worked try which Dean once more converted. Once again the scores were level at 17 points each but, seven minutes later Mike Posthumus scored his second try of the game but this time Dan Howells missed with his conversion attempt. A fired up Hereford pack now started to turn the screw and the pressure once more forced Luton into a series of offences and this time referee Gareth Masters awarded a penalty try which Dean converted. The game moved from end to end During the final quarter neither side was able to add to their score despite a number of opportunities and Hereford ran out winners by 24 points to 22.
This must be counted amongst the finest performances put up by a Hereford XV, the tackling from backs and forwards alike was exemplary and the guts and determination shown by each and every player was great to witness.
