The Midlands organising committee decreed that
the original match between these two sides should be replayed after the it
featured uncontested scrums when Hereford were unable to field a front row
after 48 minutes when they were leading 24-14. The Wyesiders went on to win
39-14 and both clubs agreed that result should stand. But, as Stratford were
within two scores of Hereford at the time of uncontested scrums, the
committee decided that a replay should take place. However, Stratford could
not raise a team for the first rescheduling and so the match was fixed for
Wednesday 12 April 2006. MATCH REPORT: HEREFORD's hold on second-place in Midlands 3 West (South) is still virtually unassailable in spite of a surprise home defeat by third-placed Stratford. To be overtaken for second place in the table and deprived of a play-off spot, Hereford would have to lose their final game to Pershore on Saturday by more than 100 points. Then potential rivals Stratford or Silhillians would have to win their final games by more than 100 points to overhaul the Wyesiders. Injuries to key players Will Watkins and Des White soured matters for the already depleted Hereford side. The Wyesiders, who now have eight regulars on the injured list, have their work cut out to have a full strength side available for a play-off clash, probably with Bridgnorth, on 29 April 2006. Stratford, who fielded a strong side, took an early lead when they crossed for a try but Hereford struck back when Gary Preece kicked a penalty. Hereford, perhaps with an eye already on the play-offs, played rather more flamboyant rugby than the conditions warranted and allowed Stratford an interception try. Another Stratford try extended the visitors' lead still further after the break but an excellent try by the promising Sean Day, converted by Preece, brought Hereford back into the match. But just when it seemed as if Hereford might push on to get something from the game, a further Stratford try sealed the win for the visitors. |
