LUDLOW  19 - 45  HEREFORD

Saturday 18 March 2006

Friendly

Hereford's rugby first XV continued the winning run which they hope will take then into the Midlands 3 play-offs with a 45-19 win in a friendly at Midlands 3 West (North) side Ludlow.

The visitors started with a bang when good handling between the backline put right wing Richard Rees in for a try in the very first attack, but eight minutes later Ludlow – who are mid-table in their league – took the lead with a converted try after a lapse in Hereford’s defence.

A 40 metre counterattack by fullback Sean Day then set up good field position for Hereford and quick ruck ball enabled scrumhalf Billy Grisman to force his way over for a try.

The lead changed hands again when the home side scored another try two minutes before the interval.

Ludlow kicked off the second period and Hereford’s inability to cope with the high ball in windy conditions led to a surge by the Ludlow forwards which resulted in a converted try and a 19-10 lead.

But there was plenty of time for the visitors to respond, which they did with a vengeance, scoring 35 unanswered points in the last 25 minutes.

First skipper Jeremy Grisman put fellow centre Giles Scott through for a try which Grisman converted, before his brother, scrumhalf Billy, scored his second touchdown which Jeremy also converted to give Hereford a 24-19 lead.

Flyhalf Colin Osborne then got into the act with a fine individual try, which Grisman converted. With the floodgates truly opened, Scott added his second try before the captain capped an excellent all-round performance with a try under the posts which he converted for an individual haul of 15 points.
