SOLIHULL  24 - 17  HEREFORD

Saturday 22 October 2005

Powergen Midlands 3 West (South)

Hereford Rugby Club were pipped 24-17 in their away clash with top-of-the-table Solihull in the RFU Powergen League Midlands 3 West (South). Soilihull proved to be a well-organised outfit. But what looked like a perfectly good try which would have given Hereford a 14-lead and possibly changed the outcome of the game was not allowed.

The city club’s forwards played particularly well but it was Solihull who were first to score with a converted try. Hereford were quick to respond and Jeremy Grisman crossed the line for a try which Colin Osborne converted to make it 7-7. Just before half-time Hereford won possession from a line-out and they drove forward for Will Watkins to go over but the referee failed to see the touchdown.

Early in the second period Solihull went ahead again 14-7 with a well-worked try but Osborne landed a penalty to cut the arrears to four points. The home club’s converted third try should have been prevented, however, as poor covering allowed them the opening. Hereford then exerted pressure and they put together a sweeping move which ended with Luke Clifford crossing the line. Osborne kicked the conversion to cut Solihull’s advantage to four points. But a late penalty enabled the pacemakers to seal their victory.
