HEREFORD notched
their first win in Midlands 3 West (South) at their third attempt with a
good victory over opponents who had been relegated at the end of last
season.
Hereford battered their opponents for the first 20 minutes but
managed only one score, a penalty by Jeremy Grisman.
Nuneaton, who had the advantage of a strong wind, hit back, however,
to lead 6-3 at the interval thanks to two long-range penalties.

3 points down at half
time, the team get some strong words |

The home side, who had had a good deal of the play in the first period,
might have expected to establish more control with the wind behind them
in the second period but instead fell further behind when the visitors
rolled over from a lineout to take an 11-3 lead.
A further Grisman penalty quickly cut
arrears, though, and Gary Preece, who had an impressive game at
full-back, raced over for the first Hereford try of the game.
Grisman's successful conversion put the
Wyesiders just one point behind.
Nuneaton kicked a penalty from only
their second attack of the half as they stretched their lead again but
the in-form Grisman hit back for Hereford with two more penalties to put
the home ahead for only the second time in the game, 16-14.
At the start of added time, Preece went
over for his second try to stretch Hereford's lead to seven points.
Nuneaton unsuccessfully pressed forward
in the remaining minutes in search of the converted try they needed to
draw level.
Eighteen-year-old Ryan Ellis, who has
come up through the Hereford youth ranks, made an impressive senior
debut at outside centre. |
