HEREFORD  51 - 0  PANTEG

Wyeside, Saturday 18 September 2004

Friendly

After Hereford's scheduled Powergen Intermediate Cup first round tie against Belgrave was called off when the Leicestershire club conceded the match, the Wyesiders arranged a game against Panteg at short notice and emerged with a convincing win.

Hereford put the Panteg back line under pressure straight from the kick-off but the visitors defended resolutely for the first 10 minutes until a well-worked lineout move saw the ball spun out to Sam Ellis to go in on the right wing. Gary Preece kicked the conversion.

The Wyesiders then immediately produced a second score with good interplay between backs and forwards putting in Jeremy Grisman.

Panteg then produced their best spell of the game and were only held at bay by some ferocious tackling by skipper Wilf Rees but, after the turnaround, Hereford got back into their stride and Wayne Davies went over for a try after good driving from the Hereford pack.

Hereford's fitness then began to show and fly-half Tim Hargreaves made a break up the centre to score under the posts, with two further tries from Dez White quickly following.

Preece then went over from full-back, kicking his own conversion, and, with the match out of Panteg's reach, there was a rare substitute appearance for coach John Watkins who came on to play second-row with his son, Will.

In the closing stages, scrum-half Ben Jenkins went over from five yards to complete the scoring against determined opponents who battled until the end.
