YOUTHFUL endeavour was not enough as Hereford
went down to a 15th Powergen Midlands 2 West reverse in 18 starts against an
experienced Malvern team.
The visitors started well and, with the forwards matching their experienced opponents in the scrums and lineouts, the speedy Hereford backs looked dangerous whenever they ran the ball. Fly-half Charlie Langford gave them an early tonic with a fine individual try, selling two dummy scissors before racing over for an unconverted corner try. Malvern gradually countered the lively Hereford start and took the lead on the half-hour with a well-worked try and conversion. Problems started for Hereford when they gifted Malvern a couple of soft tries before the break, both when attempted clearance kicks were charged down. Despite another spirited performance from scrum-half Billy Grisman and a battling contribution from young lock Will Watkins, Hereford could not stop the experienced home campaigners as tries came at regular intervals. Both backs and forwards tackled well as Hereford never stopped trying, but the wily home team took advantage of the inexperienced opposition to complete a comfortable victory. |
